For Bhumi Pednekar, the choice between skincare and make-up is non-existent. The actor, who is a firm believer in skincare to maintain a radiant inner and outer glow, doesn’t compromise on makeup. “It enhances what you already have and gives you the freedom to play. That’s the fun part of beauty – it helps your individuality shine through!” Pednekar says vogue India in an exclusive interview. So when it came to collaborating with MAC Cosmetics, the star was compelled to be part of the disruptive culture with diversity, inclusivity and representation at the forefront. Before, Bhumi Pednekar sits down to discuss all things beauty – from skincare remedies to makeup hacks and her take on the beauty industry’s toxic elitist standards.
On her skincare routine
I firmly believe that less is more, and I try to instill this belief in everything I do. For skincare, my holy grail has to be CTM – cleanser, toner and moisturizer and I never miss a thing even with my busy schedule. Other than that, there are a few skincare items that I take very seriously – always remove my makeup before going to bed, apply vitamin E and argan oil, use a DIY mask at the honey, turmeric and milk for my skin and last but not least, using almond oil to moisturize my skin. An 11-step skincare routine is hard to maintain during breakouts, etc. So I try to balance the same by including lots of vitamins and minerals in my diet to keep my skin healthy.
On maintaining its inner and outer glow
Drinking enough water every day, following a skincare routine that works for you, applying sunscreen even when you’re out of the sun, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough rest are things that work for me. . The most important thing I’m trying to remember is that every skin type is different and what works for someone may not work for me. One thing I’ve experienced myself that I can’t talk about enough is the power of positive thinking. Practice affirmations and believe in yourself. Use words that evoke happiness and instill confidence and strength. And of course, as the wise say, if you are happy and resplendent on the inside, it will automatically reflect on the outside.
On her love of makeup and three products she can’t live without
Since I was a child, makeup has always been part of my life. For as long as I can remember I have been a lover of MAC Cosmetics and as I grew older and learned more about makeup my fondness for the brand grew. Honestly, one product that I swear by and that is still part of my vanity is my MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation. Besides that, my favorite lipsticks that I use almost regularly are Velvet Teddy, Mehr and All Fired Up. Personally, I think these bullet lipsticks are the best beauty pick-me-ups – something that helps transform you instantly. Additionally, I also have a very special place in my heart for Velvet Teddy, as it was the very first product I purchased from MAC Cosmetics. My cousin bought it for me from the United States because at the time MAC didn’t have a brand present. Incidentally, it was also the first product I bought when MAC was launched in India.
On her preference between minimal or maximal makeup
I’m someone who loves makeup and everything that goes with it. Therefore, I feel like I’m a bit of both – both minimalist and maximalist. It mostly depends on my mood. I love no-makeup makeup and I’m equally comfortable switching things up and going for a graphic eye look and bold lips. Makeup has a lot of power, and I’m here for it.
On the makeup tricks or hacks she’s learned over the years
I work almost daily with Sonic Sarwate, the Global Senior Artist of MAC Cosmetics India. It has transformed my makeup technique a lot. I like an extended lid. I learned how to get that perfect smudged liner that has now become my favorite look. Contouring too – when you learned how to perfect it, it really changes your facial structure and enhances your features. Sonic has also transformed the way I apply and blend my foundation so it doesn’t look cakey.
On her 5 minute makeup look
My makeup in 5 minutes requires me to use only three products. For my base, I use MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation and set it with Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation. After that, I literally use the cult lipstick – Ruby Woo as my lipstick and blush. It is so easy to blend and gives perfect color to my cheeks.
