Bridgerton actress Ruby Barker spoke candidly about her mental health struggles in a video uploaded to instagram. The 25-year-old, who plays Lady Marina Crane in the hit Netflix period drama, has opened up about a recent hospital stay.

In the initial video, Barker begins by asking, “How are you?” How are you really? She then shared that she was in the hospital, had started to feel better and would soon be discharged. Speaking candidly, she told the camera:

“I’ve been really sick for a very long time and I just want to be honest with everyone: I’m fighting.”

During the five-minute video released last week, Barker explains how she plans to take a break and encourages others who are struggling to do the same and not be hard on themselves.

“People always told me to stop being so hard on myself and I never really, really knew what that meant. What does it really mean? Stop being hard with yourself or love yourself? You hear those terms, you hear those buzzwords…slogans…and the world can be such a confusing place.

Sometimes it’s enough to pause and say, “I can’t do this right now. I need support” – and that’s basically where I need to go.

She stressed that she hadn’t hit ‘rock bottom’, but rather was on ‘new heights’, urging people to think about the linguistics used when talking about mental health: ‘We really need to change the dialogue…because people want to have those conversations, but we don’t even know how to have those conversations.

In a follow-up video posted on his Instagram yesterday, Barker said the response to his sharing of his mental health struggles has been “incredible”. Visibly moved, she said: “You have made me so happy to be alive and I am very grateful to you.”

“I really didn’t know what to expect when I put this video on. I didn’t expect so many people to contact me and let me know how they are and tell me about their own mental health issues. .

Barker goes on to say that the response and the stories shared made her feel less alone and she hopes it has also given comfort to those who also have mental health issues.
