Brockton Felon caught selling guns to undercover cop

BROCKTON — A Brockton man with multiple prior felony convictions will serve six months in prison after being convicted on Monday of selling weapons to an undercover officer in 2019.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Tyrell Hampton, 32, will also serve two years on probation after his prison sentence after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of two doctored handguns in February 2020.

Investigators learned in June 2019 that Hampton was selling weapons on social media.

An undercover agent posing as a buyer contacted Hampton on Facebook and arranged to purchase two handguns, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

During negotiations, Hampton told the undercover officer that they should move quickly to buy the guns because “they’re going fast but I can always get more.”

Hampton eventually sold a Taurus 9mm pistol and a Glock 9mm pistol, along with 21 rounds, to the cop for $2,200.

After Hampton’s arrest, investigators traced the two handguns to a dealer who the bureau says bought guns cheaply in Georgia and sold them in Massachusetts.

Authorities found that Hampton met with the arms dealer about eight times and purchased about 14 firearms.

He has multiple prior felony convictions, including drugs, and a prior gun conviction.

As a criminal, Hampton is prohibited from owning firearms and ammunition.
