Curtiss attended school in Goodridge, MN, graduating in 1966. He worked in Albert Lee and Minneapolis before returning to Goodridge in 1968. On February 14, 1968, Curtiss married Donna Anderson in St. Paul , MN. From this union, they were blessed with five children: Tami, Tommie, Kurt, Karla and Donavon. He joined Pipe Fitters Union Local 126 based in Detroit Lakes, MN where he began his welding career. In 2008, he and Donna purchased “Big Daddy’s Quick Stop” in Detroit Lakes, MN, where he was a maintenance manager and enjoyed tinkering with the car wash. He also liked to drive around town each morning, watching gas prices to gauge his competition. They sold the gas station in 2016 and continued to live in Detroit Lakes until 2019, when they moved back to their farm in Goodridge.

Curtiss was known for his sense of humor, tricks, and creative Snapchats. He loved mowing the lawn and tinkering around the shop, including welding small projects for Donna, fixing the trailer and playing on his Hydro-Mac. Curtiss also liked to stop by local casinos and often won the jackpot. Karaoke was one of his favorites while driving the car, but it was an annoyance to those who rode with him.
