Mozilla is working on a new feature in the organization’s Firefox web browser that can be used to force a specific color scheme on the sites you visit.

Most browsers already support light and dark modes, but the functionality is limited to painting the browser chrome using the color scheme. The content of the website remains unchanged when the feature is enabled or configured.

The latest version of Firefox Nightly, version 96.0a1, comes with a new feature that extends the functionality. Once activated, the sites will also be displayed in the selected color scheme.

Here’s what the feature looks like on Ghacks. Dark Mode was enabled on Windows 10 system and Firefox chose it to display browser UI and web page content using the color scheme.

All sites are displayed using the selected mode and color palette. Firefox includes options to change certain settings, including text and background colors.

Here’s how to configure the feature in Firefox Nightly:

  1. Select Menu> Settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Language & Appearance section.
  3. Activate the “Colors” button on the page.

Here you get the following options:

  • To configure the force color feature on websites, set “Replace page specified colors with your selections above” to Always.
  • Change the colors of the text and background to your liking.
  • Also change the colors of visited and unvisited links.
  • Select OK to save the new configuration.

Websites will be painted using the selected operating system mode, light or dark, and the colors selected in Firefox preferences.

The feature was announced by Mozilla employee Morgan on Twitter. According to the information published there, users should expect that some content may not be perfect when forced color mode is enabled. Users are encouraged to report bugs and issues on Bugzilla.

The functionality to replace the colors of text, background and links on sites has been a part of Firefox for a long time. The new functionality goes even further by also adding the color mode of the operating system to the site; this paints every element of the site using the selected color mode.

Firefox users had to use browser extensions like Midnight Lizard before doing anything similar. Mozilla’s implementation was rudimentary at the time – there was no override or option to customize a specific site’s color scheme using native options. Since it was only published in Nightly at the time, it is possible that missing features will be added to improve the usability of the feature.

Now you: light or dark mode, what is your preference?
