Conflated was the shock winner of the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup at the Dublin Racing Festival to burst onto the scene for Cheltenham’s equivalent.
Davy Russell headed the 18/1 shot to a 6½l loss to Minella Indo on Saturday and the experienced jockey could now face a tough choice of who to ride in the Cheltenham Gold Cup as trainer Gordon Elliott also saddles the hero of Savills Chase Galvin.
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
Speaking on the latest episode of our Cheltenham Countdown podcast series, Paddy’s resident jockey turned expert Ruby Walsh revealed who he would choose to team up with if he were in Russell’s shoes.
While Paddy’s top trader Frank Hickey thinks it’s a clear choice between the two fantasies. You can listen to the Cheltenham Countdown broadcast in full BELOW.

“Davy is in a unique position in that he has ridden both Galvin and Conflated. Judging by the form, I would choose Galvin. He has already been to Cheltenham and won on the track in the National Hunt Chase.
“Davy would be a better judge of that turn of the foot – was it a strong gallop in the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup? Did Conflated pick up a really strong pace? He knocked it down at the end and made a slight mistake and still made it to the line.
“I would side with Galvin, but if you were riding you would have an idea of them and you would probably have a different opinion.”
“If I calculated the price of the one that Davy would pilot, I would be very short of Galvin. You don’t want to commit to Galvin and the next thing he gets hurt, though.
“If both arrive in good shape, I’d be pretty sure he’ll ride Galvin.”
