It wasn’t meant to be for Al Boom Photo when he tried to make it a Gold Cups hat trick at last season’s Cheltenham Festival as Willie Mullins’ stable star finished behind Minella Indo and A Plus Late.
The odds are against the 10-year-old who is fighting for the title, the last former champion to achieve the feat was Kauto Star in 2009 when he dethroned his teammate Denman.
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
It has been indicated that Al Boom Photo will take place more this quarter ahead of the Cheltenham feature film, but the two-time Gold Cup winner begins his campaign at his usual Tramore playground on New Years Day.
Despite being behind the market principles in our antepost bets for the 2022 Gold Cup, our resident jockey turned expert Ruby Walsh believes Al Boom Photo is good value to win back the crown.
We had a dry fall so Al Boom Photo hasn’t run yet but who can say he won’t have a run between January and March?
He looks to be in great shape at home but he’s going to be that kind of price [for Tramore]. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from backing him all over the place for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. I would rather support him for the Gold Cup before he races to Tramore.
I think a lot of the favorites have raised questions about themselves over the Christmas season.
Willie felt he didn’t have Al Boom Photo as well as he might have had during last year’s Gold Cup. He hasn’t been beaten so far, he’s a double winner and he stays. Okay, he takes the risk of jumping but they can all do it.
I just think he’s proven that he can do it and is priced very fair in every way.
