Race-by-race preview and advice for Wednesday’s Canterbury meeting

0

Hazards: 7. Taizai comes through the same race at Kensington, she ran within reach and boxed pretty well for second place. Not far from a win, yet to see a heavy but must be respected. 9. Ultimate Pride is promising and tried hard on the restart with a last second at Wyong a few weeks ago.

Debut was on a heavy track at Canterbury and she ran a fourth place finish. Keep in mind. 4.Spitfire took them on this course last time and was exhausted late. Racing constantly, seems to handle the heavy well and that has it in the mix.

How to play it: Money From The Sky to be won; Trifecta 1/ 4.7.9/4.7.9

Odds and events: odds

Race 3 – 2:55 p.m.: PRECISE AIR HANDICAP (1200 METERS)

7. Devil’s Throat is straight out of a first win to a BM72 but he is a horse that has always promised a bit and could now continue. Has a heavy track to its name and can run within reach or get out of rhythm. Good luck doubling.

Dangers: 1. Black Duke loves Canterbury but things don’t always fall on him. Hit the line as usual here last time and he’s a big lane winner, so if he gets the breaks he’s more than capable of winning. 3. Not another Reiby was a betting drifter and didn’t shoot when he took over here a few weeks ago. He is much better than that, has won a few races on the heavyweight and can improve a lot.

6. Darbari may take a run or two to find his feet, but he’s a good tracker and picks up with a few recent tries under his belt. Turn signals for its first run, one to watch for the future.

How to play it: Devil’s Throat Victory

Odds and events: odds

Race 4 – 3:30 p.m.: VINERY YEARLINGS HANDICAP (1250 METERS)

6. Publicist looks well-placed to refresh since an outright win at Warwick Farm around seven weeks ago. Held up to the task with a 1250m trial win recently, probably leading and should be tough to beat.

Hazards: 9. Arbitration broke through for a popular win at Warwick Farm three weeks ago and form has held up well with both placegetters winning since. Failed on a heavy trail at the start, but adapts here and it’s good luck.

2. Fine tip looks like a very promising filly and she’s back from a break since successive wins at Kensington and here in December. Ran fourth on his debut on a beaten heavy 1.6-length track. Protect yourself. 8. Divine has been off the scene since May, but she’s another one to watch closely. Ran third behind Hilal and King Of Sparta on his debut on a soft 7 before winning here on the second start.

How to play it: Publicist to win; Trifecta 6/2,8,9/2,8,9

Odds and events: To divide

Race 5 – 4:05 p.m.: BE TO MATE, NOMINATE HANDICAP (1900 METERS)

5. Forever You has a tricky gate but has proven to be a very good wet tracker as it works through the notes. The two recent wins have been dominant and while coming back a bit on the road a test track should make up for that. Hard to beat again.

Dangers: 3. Legend has it finished strong to take a late win at Warwick Farm last time out and he’s more than capable of continuing. Was a month between races there too and is competent in the wet. 4. Main Stage doesn’t win out of turn but he posted a lead win at Kensington a few weeks ago. Still, to win on this track, but handles the wet and must be taken into account. 10. Animal Lord is a consistent guy at freeway level and although his punch rate isn’t great, he still runs and comes up with 52kg for the first time in a while. No shock if he comes up against a placement.

How to play it: Forever You to win; Trifecta 5/3,4,10/3,4,10

Odds and events: odds

Race 6 – 4:40 p.m.: TAB HANDICAP (1200 METERS)

5. Pulse control could have hit a town run at the right time after taking wet track wins at Port Macquarie and Newcastle. He is the horse in race form, good with a claim and handles the terrain so should be very competitive.

Hazards: 6. Shanjomi was not disgraced for the first time at Warwick Farm when beaten within two lengths by Stormborn. More fit for it and although she hasn’t seen a wet track yet, she’s right if she can handle it. 2. Patinated Ruby Straight back in class after finishing in midfield in the G3 Triscay Stakes.

She’s a practical mare who handles a wet track, but hasn’t seen a heavyweight, and should be included in the odds. 3. Born of the Sun was solid in the market first and ran enough without threatening to be beaten three lengths by Stormborn. Fitter for this and its best is good enough.

How to play it: Impulse Control to win; Trifecta 5/2,3,6/2,3,6

Odds and events: To divide

Race 7 – 5:15 p.m.: HYLAND RACE COLORS HANDICAP (1,100 METERS)

4. Fleet Air Arm won three of three and did the job easily first over 900m at Newcastle on a soft 7 track. Extra travel no problem, looks like the wet isn’t either and can’t see any reason why it should not come near.

Hazards: 5. Smirnova is another undefeated runner and she’s been picking up since her last on a soft 7 here in November. She’s trying hard and she’s a definite threat. 6. Before departure is a promising guy who hasn’t raced since a tight fourth place on a highway on Everest day.

The wet track doesn’t seem like a problem for him and the multiple charges are worth throwing away. 1. Jerle was an all-around winner on a soft 7 in October at Warwick Farm, but his early record indicates he is taking a run. Fitter for two tries and his heavy track form has him in the mix.

How to play it: Fleet Air Arm victory

Odds and events: To divide

Race 8 – 5:50 p.m.: HANDICAP STUD & STABLE STAFF AWARDS (1250 METERS)

13. Roots showed potential stakes when last drafted, but is currently being tracked by the ratings. Rounded them up for an easy first win and stays in the weights for a modest class increase. Again to see a heavy but the horse to beat.

Hazards: 4. Marnix reached the peak of his form with successive victories at Warwick Farm over 1400m in January. Refreshed from the last day of Australia, seems to handle the rain well and is hard to ignore. 12. Gracilistyla was heavily backed first here a few weeks ago and found itself too far out before taking the line in second.

Won a soft 7 so should go on a heavy and should be considered. 3. Route of the sessions has a good track record and was a little too strong at the end of the game three weeks ago. No exposure on heavy track but hard to hit his resolve. Certain luck.

How to play it: Roots to win; Trifecta 13/3,4,12/3,4,12

Odds and events: To divide
