After finishing second in the first two stages of the Santos Festival of Cycling, Ruby Roseman-Gannon (BikeExchange-Jayco) did better on Tuesday in the final stage of the three-stage race.

In a reduced peloton sprint to Lobethal, 23-year-old Roseman-Gannon benefited from a textbook from her BikeExchange-Jayco teammates before sprinting to a comfortable stage victory. Australian champion Nicole Frain (Roxsolt Liv SRAM) took second place – her third podium in as many days – while Roseman-Gannon’s last lead rider, Georgia Baker, retained third place.

The day of racing was punctuated by several promising breakaways which emerged on several occasions. Frain attacked solo with around 70km remaining in the 86km stage and was then joined by Roseman-Gannon, Georgie Howe (Knights of Suburbia) and Baker – all eventual podium finishers on the road.

They were quickly caught, before Lizzy Young (Butterfields) escaped in the longest escape of the entire tour. Young led solo until just under 10km to go when, after a long chase from Amanda Spratt (BikeExchange-Jayco), she was caught on the first of two short gravel sections.

Grace Brown (Garmin-Australia) tried to escape on the gravel but without success, and it was finally a reduced peloton that reached Lobethal before the final sprint.

In this sprint, Roseman-Gannon had three BikeExchange-Jayco teammates in the lead: guest rider Amber Pate, Alex Manly and Baker. And when it came time to sprint, Roseman-Gannon soared to an impressive victory.

Roseman-Gannon’s consistent placings in both stage finishes and intermediate sprints also earned him overall victory at the Cycling Festival. Frain finished second overall, ahead of stage two winner Maeve Plouffe (ARA Pro Racing Sunshine Coast).

The Santos Festival of Cycling is a nationwide stage race which, for the second consecutive year, replaces the COVID-affected Santos Tour Down Under. The three-day men’s race will take place from Thursday to Sunday.
