A dachshund rescued from a meat market in South Korea has found a loving home in Cottingham.

Ruby was rescued by the DMT Dachshund Rescue and Support Group which rescues puppies from the dog meat trade in China and South Korea. Barely 24 hours later, she would have been euthanized.

Ruby arrived at her new home in East Yorkshire after flying in from South Korea via Paris on March 21. Cottingham couple Sue and Phil Wilkson decided to adopt Ruby after having had their own dachshunds since 1993.

Sue said: “We saw Ruby when she was rescued from a shelter in South Korea. She was rescued just 24 hours before she was euthanized. I just fell in love with that face. She looked so sad and seemed to cry for love.

“Having always had long-haired miniature dachshunds, Phil and I decided to try adopting him. We already had three dachshunds, so how about one more?

“We were lucky enough to be chosen to adopt her and she flew from South Korea on March 21, to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, then on the Eurostar where she was picked up by d other members of the association. They drove her to Trowell Services where we picked her up and brought her back to Cottingham.

“She was cared for by kennels in South Korea who care for the dogs, bring them back to health and give them all the veterinary care they need, all funded by donations from members of the Facebook group, now over 7,000.

“She has settled in really well so far. It was obvious that she had never been in a garden as she needed a lot of encouragement to get out. She is very food oriented as in the past, she didn’t know when she would have her next meal.

“We took her on a dachshund walk on Sunday April 3 around East Park, organized by the East Yorkshire Dachshund Group (inc Hull) on Facebook. She was welcomed by everyone and s’ is well understood with all dogs and humans. It’s small steps but we’re getting there.”

The East Yorkshire Dachshunds Group (inc Hull) will be holding another Dachshund Gathering on Sunday 24th April to raise funds for DMT so they can continue their efforts to save the dogs.

Page manager Melanie Young said: “We are very happy to have Ruby with us for the meet.

“The group started as a page where dachshund owners can share tips and advice with each other as it is a difficult breed to care for. We only fundraise twice a year, last year we raised £600 for charity, other times dachshund owners are welcome to socialize with each other.

“This time we will be raising money for the DMT Dachshund Rescue and Support Group, and I hope with the fundraising we are doing we can see more dogs like Ruby find their forever home in the East Yorkshire.”

The game will take place on April 24 at 11 a.m. on the main field of East Park.
