Ruby Walsh advises on Cheltenham’s final day

BEFORE the final day of the Cheltenham Festival, Paddy Power Ambassador Ruby Walsh gave her advice for the final day

1:30 p.m., JCB Triumph Hurdle Vauban/Fil Dor

“Willie Mullins’ horses appear to be in very good condition. Vaubanit’s a good horse but things have changed, and we don’t know how dry the ground will be by Friday, so all indications Golden thread in the Triumph Hurdle.

“It’s going to be a lot more of an endurance test and if it’s still soft on Friday I’ll be on the side Golden thread. If the field dries up, Vauban and Flute player are faster horses but Golden thread is a stronger Stayer.

“If the word ‘good’ is there [referring to the weather]I’m in the Vauban camp, if it goes from bad to good, I’ll be with Golden thread.

2:10 p.m. McCoy Contractors County Handicap Obstacle Statesman

Statesman is inexperienced but he is quite handicapped and I am on his side. He’ll be enough for me, he’s a graduated horse in the making.

2:50 p.m., Albert Bartlett Novice Hurdle Crete

“It’s a decent race, I’m not sure Cocooning Minella sets up pretty well for this distance, but I was really taken with it Crete at Haydock and it was on sticky ground. I know it will fit Ginto too but maybe I’ll side with Hillcrest.

“I’m not confident though, it’s hard to call but I’ll be with Crete more than Ginto.

3.30pm Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase See you later

“I have been with See you later a long time and I’m not going to jump ship now. He is in very good shape and it is very easy to change his form in Leopardstown.

Galvin and Minelle Indo are good Stayers, but I’ve always been a sucker for a bit of speed, and I like A Plus Tard, it’s the one for me.

4:10 p.m., St. James’s Place Festival Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase Billaway

“The headgear will help Billaway but this is his third time in the race and he’s come in at a good price people can try, either way.

4:50 p.m., pursuit of Mrs. Paddy Power Mares Elimay

“I’m in the Elimay camp, she was unlucky last year, and the cheap parts suited her the last time she started. I hope she can atone for last year.

Zambella is a much better mare this year than last, and the course and terrain will suit her. I’m in the Elimay camp but don’t let me discourage you Zambella.”

5:30 p.m., Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Grand Dury

Categorically chosen going in the right direction. He won the Land Rover Bumper, but if he’s next Field scamp, I do not know.

“I tipped Field Scamp last year, but I knew more about him than Chosen emphatically. He seems to be in good shape but there are some pretty decent horses here at good prices like Hollow Games at 7/1. Five O’Clock’s last race was in this race two years ago. I hope he runs well but he has been away from the track for a long time.

“That said, it’s Grand Dury for me.”
