The meaning of Princess Charlotte’s horseshoe funeral brooch

Today Princess Charlotte, the daughter of William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, was the youngest royal present at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. The seven-year-old royal was accompanied by her older brother, Prince George, both dressed in black mourning clothes.

The young children accompanied their mother and step-grandmother, Kate and Camilla, as well as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who all wore symbolic nods to the late Queen.

Princess Charlotte was no exception, publicly wearing her first brooch. It was a sweet and poignant tribute to his great-grandmother – who was affectionately known as ‘Gan-Gan’. Pinned to his coat was a diamond horseshoe brooch, a gift given to him by his late great-grandmother and a fond keepsake of his love of horses.

It is a love shared by his great-granddaughter; Kate was quoted in 2018 as saying her only daughter inherited the Queen’s passion for horses.

It is an interest that has been taken up by so many members of his family. The Queen’s daughter, Princess Anne, was an avid equestrian, who became the first royal to compete in the Olympics. His daughter, Zara Philips, followed in his footsteps and also had a prestigious equestrian career.

The Queen’s granddaughter, Lady Louise Windsor, is another horse fan. She too honored her grandmother by wearing a necklace depicting a silhouette of a horse’s head at the wake at Westminster Hall and at the Queen’s funeral.

It’s a fitting tribute to a woman who has spent her life wearing pieces to convey meaning and symbolism. Her Majesty’s extensive collection was put to good use throughout her life. She often wore national codes to honor the countries she visited, or as a nod to foreign dignitaries; like his famous maple leaf brooch, a gift from the Canadian people. But she also wore personal brooches on special occasions; like little tokens of memory. At her husband’s funeral, she wore his Richmond brooch – a wedding gift given to her grandmother, Queen Mary – and, at his memorial, a ruby scarab brooch given to her by her beloved husband. There is no doubt that Her Majesty would have approved of her great-granddaughter’s choice of dress today.
