Tip a duo Tim for Ripon’s success each way

Can Bay Breeze have a price?

Back Bay Breeze @ 8/1 in the 1:40 PM at Ripon

Yesterday’s column provided another straightforward winner in the form of Tranquil Night at 7/2, who produced a spectacularly easy winner from his handicap, but we really should have counted the 24/1 double as Garrus failed to put his nose in on the line .

I thought Gray was home and watered down, and I had already started cheering him on when he came up front. Still small margins. Very small.

Thursday’s season opener at Ripon could be a chance for Tim Easterby to improve on some pretty poor stats for the season. He had a winner yesterday Beverley, but it’s only 2-72 this year at a measly 3%. We are therefore not guided by numbers.

His Bay Breeze seems like a one-sided bet as he will have his soft ground, and he looks too big at 8/1 with all three spots. He won a Beverley maiden last September after a number of consistent efforts without scoring, and ran pretty well in a 0-95 Nursery Handicap in his next run. He had a few issues in there but it was again a good effort in the proving ground from a mark of 71. I wouldn’t say he’s progressive but he was a juvenile tough that took its course well.

Easterby is very familiar with this horse’s family having trained his dam Midnight Mojito and half-sister Midnight Martini – who was a 90 rated performer and acted on soft ground. It seems open and he generally stays quite well in his runs.

Wade can be a machine in the mud

Return Wade’s Magic @ 17/2 at 14:15 in Ripon

We’re sticking with Easterby again for 2:15, and to say he does it well would be an understatement. Three flee from his court, and an old perennial favorite golden apollo is down these days, but he’s eight years old and he’s growing.

I’d rather play another one-sided bet on Wade’s Magic, winner of the course and distance – one with soft heavy form. He won three times last season and was a model of consistency and finished second as part of a 1-2-3 for Easterby in the sprint final at Nottingham last season behind Ava Go Joe – who scored on the Westwood yesterday.

It’s similar to the first selection and has the same three-wide draw, but the price makes up for that.
