The house sign investigation into the attack on the United States Capitol interviewed more than a thousand witnesses during its year-long investigation. Their testimony, recorded and released publicly, helped expose efforts by Trump and his enablers to overturn the legitimate 2020 election results that gave Joe Biden the presidency.
The hearings introduced the American public to the people who, openly and behind closed doors, conspired to prevent the peaceful transfer of power on January 6, 2021. Also the patriots who tried to stop these machinations or played a part in the failure of the plot.
Here’s a look at some of the central people at the January 6 committee hearings.
Members of the January 6 House Select Committee
The House panel investigating the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021 and the events leading up to that infamous day is comprised of nine members. They include seven Democratic representatives and two Republicans. Despite the uneven composition of the panel, the hearings were very bipartisan with the Chairman of Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi recounting events and Republican Vice President Liz Cheney of Wyoming leading the charge against former President Donald Trump.
Cheney didn’t hold back on other party members who have not come forward to help with the investigation, nor to make shocking revelations. Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, also suggested that charges be brought against Trump. The committee referred a potential case of witness tampering by the former president.
Other committee members include Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger and Democratic Representatives Pete Aguilar, Zoe Lofgren, Elaine Luria, Stephanie Murphy, Jamie Raskin and Adam Schiff. Members took turns leading the sessions, each focusing on a different aspect of the seven-part plan to overturn the 2020 election results.
Witnesses who stood out
Republicans made up the majority of witnesses who testified. Some of the most damning testimony came from people who were part of Trump’s inner circle or worked in the White House. Recorded testimony from former Attorney General William Barr made it clear that Trump was aware there was no voter fraud. Others testified that the former president was told that he had lost the fair and the place of the elections, Still, he insisted on going ahead with the “Big Lie.”
The shocking testimony of Mark Meadows’ former aide, former Trump chief of staff Cassidy Hutchinson, marked a turning point in the hearings. The 25-year-old’s bravery inspired many other witnesses to come forward to tell the committee what they knew. It also sparked backlash from Trump and his lackeys, but she’s not alone.
Election Fraud Lies Caused Real Danger to Innocents
rusty arbors, a lifelong Republican and the Speaker of the State House of Arizona, gave moving testimony on the campaign to pressure state lawmakers to overturn Biden’s victory in GOP-led states. For refusing to declare the results fraudulent, he was the subject of a public smear campaign including a man with a gun harassing his family and neighbors. Now the Arizona Republican Party Executive Committee is officially Censored Bowers for giving his testimony. “He is no longer a Republican in good standing”, they wrote in a statement.
Two witnesses who demonstrated Trump and his hacks total lack of consideration for the consequences and the possibility that someone could be injured or die to spread false information about the election were Shaye Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman. Moss worked as a scrutineer in Fulton County, Georgia, and asked her mother to help her with the 2020 election.
Rudy Guiliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, and the former president himself put them at the center of their fake voter fraud plot in Georgia. Their heartbreaking testimony explained how their lives were turned upside down when they began to receive death threats and experience harassment in their homes, online and in public, much of which was racist in nature, rabid Trump supporters.
